On September 16, 2011 the Leahy-Smith America Invents Act was put into effect, which aims to foster innovation and spur job creation in the United States. This Act sets into motion the most comprehensive overhaul to our nation's patent system since 1836. Among many changes, it changes our first to invent system to a first to file, placing emphasis on the first inventor to file the patent application.
